Scientific Large-scale Infrastructure for Computing/Communication Experimental Studies – Implementation Phase

Duration: 01/06/2026 – 31/05/2029
Total Funding: € 1,334,426.69

Overview

SLICES-IP is a Horizon Europe Coordination and Support Action (CSA) that implements the next phase of the SLICES Research Infrastructure (SLICES-RI), an ESFRI landmark initiative for advanced digital infrastructure research. Building on the results of the SLICES Preparatory Phase (SLICES-PP), the project aims to establish the legal, governance, operational and technical foundations required for the future European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). SLICES-IP focuses on developing and validating the SLICES service portfolio, implementing secure and FAIR-compliant data management and Open Science practices, engaging scientific and industrial user communities through training and outreach activities, and promoting communication, dissemination and exploitation of project results.

The project also strengthens collaboration with European and international research infrastructures to ensure interoperability, sustainability and broad access to a federated experimental infrastructure supporting reproducible research in next-generation computing and communication technologies.

Objectives

1

Implement the next phase of the SLICES Research Infrastructure (SLICES-RI), building on the achievements of the SLICES Preparatory Phase (SLICES-PP).

2

Establish the legal, governance, financial and operational framework required for the transition of SLICES-RI towards a sustainable European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).

3

Develop and operationalise the SLICES service portfolio, providing researchers with access to a federated, large-scale experimental infrastructure for advanced computing and communication research.

4

Implement a secure, interoperable and FAIR-compliant data management framework supporting Open Science principles and the full lifecycle of experimental data.

5

Strengthen user engagement through training, capacity building, scientific community support and collaboration with industrial stakeholders.

6

Promote communication, dissemination and exploitation of project results to maximise scientific, technological and societal impact.

7

Foster collaboration and interoperability with European and international research infrastructures, contributing to the European Research Area (ERA) and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

8

Ensure the long-term sustainability, accessibility and operational readiness of SLICES-RI through coordinated implementation, stakeholder engagement and strategic planning.

eBOS Role in the Project

eBOS participates in SLICES-IP as an innovation partner, contributing to the implementation of the SLICES Research Infrastructure. Its role focuses on data management, communication, dissemination, exploitation and stakeholder engagement activities, supporting the project’s objective of establishing a sustainable European research infrastructure for large-scale experimental studies in computing and communication technologies.
