Sustainable Knowledge Platform for the European Maritime & Logistics Industry

Duration: 16/06/2008 – 15/06/2011
Total Funding: € 2,200,000

Overview

The European maritime transport and logistics industry plays a vital role in enabling trade, economic growth, and regional integration. However, the sector faces a range of complex and evolving challenges, including fragmented information flows, environmental sustainability pressures, regulatory complexity, digital transformation, and the need for greater efficiency and resilience in supply chains. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated, evidence-based decision-making supported by reliable and accessible knowledge. In response to this need, the SKEMA initiative was launched to create a centralised, sustainable knowledge resource.

SKEMA aimed to establish a Sustainable Knowledge Platform designed to support policymakers and stakeholder groups within the European maritime transport and logistics industry. The platform featured a comprehensive Knowledge Base, which was developed through Consolidation Studies, Periodic Studies, and outputs from Thematic Activities addressing critical industry challenges. By collecting and structuring previously scattered and unorganised information, SKEMA transformed it into accessible and actionable knowledge. Over time, the SKEMA Knowledge Platform became a key reference point for stakeholders across the sector, fostering the growth of an active and diverse network of users from both business and public sectors, who continue to contribute to its ongoing development and sustainability.
