The Integrator-centric approach for realising innovative energy efficient buildings in connected sustainable green neighbourhoods

Duration: 01/01/2022 – 31/12/2026
Total Funding: € 25,182,074.23

Overview

The transition to green buildings faces several barriers, including high costs, limited access to capital, fragmented regulations, and a lack of awareness and incentives. Inconsistencies in investment and policy slow adoption, while the complexity of integrating new technologies across different sectors, adds further difficulty. Diverse stakeholder priorities and a lack of harmonised certification systems hinder large-scale uptake. The concept of green building neighbourhoods (GBNs) is still emerging, requiring clearer definitions, improved tools, and integrated strategies that consider energy efficiency, environmental standards, and social equity across building and district levels.

PROBONO aims to provide validated solutions for the design, construction and operation of zero-emissions and positive energy buildings, as part of sustainable GBN. It will support stakeholders in creating strategic GBN plans, integrating sustainable technologies, smart materials, and digital tools like Digital Twins. The project will enable interdisciplinary collaboration and promote long-term planning using IoT, AI, and simulation tools for energy optimisation and social innovation. It will also strengthen stakeholder engagement, improve policy alignment, and provide replicable models to guide cities and developers. PROBONO’s solutions will be validated through six Living Labs in EU member states.

Objectives

1

Provide GBN Strategic Planning Tools.

2

Provide a set of GBN Construction and Renovation Transition Acceleration Enablers.

3

Provide a methodology and a cloud-based planning tool to develop and calculate an optimized design for carbon neutral energy GBN systems.

4

Provide a GBN Digitalisation Platform – Digital Twin to enable decision support in GBN planning design, manufacturing, construction, and operation.

5

Evaluate and demonstrate the PROBONO innovations through the Living Labs (LLs).

6

Diffuse knowledge through Communications, Dissemination, Capacity Building and Recommendations.

7

Ensure scale-up through a robust Replicability, Exploitation and Commercialisation strategy.

8

Maximise the adoption of the PROBONO energy efficient approach and innovations beyond the project lifetime.

eBOS Role in the Project

In PROBONO, eBOS will leverage its technical expertise as an ICT SME to contribute to the development of the Open Knowledge Base (KB), which will serve as a reference for practices and solutions addressing interoperability, applicable legal frameworks, privacy, licensing, data governance mechanisms, standards, and technological challenges. The Open KB will: (a) Identify relevant data sources across the GBN technologies; (b) Capture relevant LL for decision support; (c) Classify data by frequency, pertinence, scope, users, providers, etc; (d) Engage GBN Data Hub users and perform evaluation. eBOS will also lead the development of a GBN Human Machine Interface, which will be an integral part of the Decision Support System and optimisation platform. Prototypes will be used to test and validate the usability of the visualisations with end-users from the LLs, which will allow refining the displays and illustrating and validating their interactions.

Additionally, in its technical tasks, eBOS will undertake the key role of Quality Assurance Manager, being responsible for applying project quality evaluation criteria, continuous monitoring of deliverables, triggering quality assurance project reviews and producing quality review reports.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101037075.
