Progress towards Federated Logistics Through The Integration Of TEN-T into A Global Trade Network
Overview
Transport and Logistics (T&L) significantly contributes to Europe’s economy, yet faces growing complexity due to global shifts. While the EU supports integration through TEN-T and urban logistics frameworks, emerging trade routes like the Silk Road and Northern Sea Route present economic and social uncertainties, making it challenging to assess their effect on the TEN-T network. Key challenges include achieving sustainable, low-emission freight corridors, addressing geopolitical uncertainty, and overcoming barriers to technology adoption. Advancing the Physical Internet and blockchain integration requires industry-wide collaboration and evidence of real-world benefits.
PLANET addressed key challenges in integrating the TEN-T network with emerging global trade corridors by focusing on two R&D pillars: a geo-economics approach to model and assess new trade routes, and the deployment of disruptive technologies such as IoT, blockchain, and automation to enable an EU-Global network. The project validated these innovations through three real-world Living Labs, involving sea and rail corridors, providing the experimentation environment for designing and exploiting future PI-oriented Integrated Green EU-Global T&L Networks (EGTN). PLANET delivered a Symbiotic Digital Clone as a collaborative planning tool and developed an Active Blueprint and Roadmap to guide stakeholders. It also built capacity in disadvantaged regions and fostered industry-wide engagement and momentum.
Objectives
Develop a Simulation Capability for the assessment of the expected impact of emerging trade routes, national strategies and technological concepts for the TEN-T corridors leading to ‘design propositions’ and blueprints for an integrated green EGNT based on market data and technology projections.
Establish the PLANET Open ICT Infrastructure facilitating implementation of EGTNs by T&L corridor actors.
Implement an Integrated Green EU-Global T&L Network Pilot incorporating 3 global corridor Living Labs, each designed using the Simulation Capability and implemented utilising the Open EGTN support ICT Infrastructure.
Design an EU Roadmap and Capacity Building effort to accelerate the realisation of EGTN, combining the above knowledge and closely aligning with prominent T&L blockchain initiatives and the ALICE PI working groups.
Conduct a Dissemination and Commercialisation Strategy Impact Assessment and Policy recommendations.
eBOS Role in the Project
In PLANET, eBOS led the development of a unified Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for the Cloud-based Open EGTN Infrastructure. This interface enables seamless communication with all infrastructure components via mobile devices, HMI touch panels, and extended support for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, such as those used in Industry 4.0 and Industrial IoT systems. The HMI was designed to be user-adaptable with role-based access and customisable dashboards built on pre-defined templates. These dashboards provided value-driven insights and visual analytics to support effective management of EGTN corridors and real-time system monitoring. The analytics were filterable, segmented, and capable of displaying automatic trends for improved data interpretation and faster decision-making.
eBOS also contributed to the project’s quality assurance procedures, focusing on the monitoring of review activities and ensuring the submission of timely quality reports.
