Innovative Solutions across the MEDiterranean for mitigation of Climate change-related heaLth rIsks and enhancing health systeM resilience
Overview
Climate change poses major risks to human health, with rising air pollution, increasing surface temperatures, and more frequent extreme weather events. The Mediterranean region, situated between temperate and arid climates, has been identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as one of Europe’s climate change hotspots. The region’s average temperature increase surpasses the global average, and rising extreme weather events and forest fires, impact both mortality and morbidity.
Addressing the impact of climate change in this region presents several challenges. Mobilising local stakeholders and citizen, and implementing effective solutions to mitigate health risks are difficult. In addition, existing methods, like alert systems for reducing exposure to heat and air pollution and vector disease models for evaluating risk to specific populations, remain inefficient. Finally, there is a notable absence of comprehensive risk assessments, emergency plans and mitigation strategies, along with difficulties in applying evidence-based forecasting, early warning systems, and decision-making models.
The vision of ISMED-CLIM is to tackle climate change-related health risks with evidence-based tools and collaborative action, safeguarding communities and ecosystems. Through five Living Labs in eight Mediterranean sites, ISMED-CLIM will test early warning tools and health interventions, to help reduce climate-related health risks and strengthen healthcare systems’ resilience.
Objectives
Enhance the understanding of climate change effects on the non-communicable diseases (NDC) and vector-borne infections across representative European countries within the Mediterranean.
Quantify how public health interventions integrating state-of-the-art technologies, public and social media can reduce personal exposures to heat and air pollution and associated health effects.
Validate the feasibility and user acceptance among high-risk professionals of a regional early warning and risk prediction tool.
Employ open, participatory, and co-creative methodologies to locally adapt and refine existing evidence-based practices and prototype tools to increase the preparedness and ability of health systems.
eBOS Role in the Project
eBOS’ primary technical responsibility in the project will be developing the Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for the ISMED-CLIM tool. This work will focus on four key components. The main portal will unify the components of the ISMED-CLIM platform, providing access to datasets and managing project elements and outcomes, while ensuring seamless service and data integration with the EU Climate-ADAPT platform. The Living Labs (LLs) Management Portal will support the coordination and implementation of the five Living Labs, focusing on testing climate change resilience interventions for vulnerable populations and healthcare systems. The Citizen App will enable users to manage their climate risk exposure by delivering real-time forecasts, alerts, and prevention guidelines, and allow them to monitor their exposure based on location. Finally, the Policy Dashboard will assist stakeholders in understanding the impact of their decisions, supporting evidence-based policymaking through user-friendly visualisations, real-time data, and policy implementation tools.
