Advanced Design of the HERMES Data Exchange Platform Supporting the Cyber Defence of Autonomous Military Systems
Overview
One of the main challenges in cybersecurity operations is the overload of poor quality and irrelevant information. Cybersecurity experts are overwhelmed with information of varying accuracy that needs to be analysed to determine their applicability and usefulness. Moreover, while cybersecurity systems can usually scale to meet higher volumes of data, they suffer from the use of proprietary or difficult to update data formats limiting their rapid evolution. Advances in technology should address the challenges of overloading a cybersecurity system with poor quality, untimely, and irrelevant cybersecurity information.
HERMES aimed to design and deliver the HERMES Data Exchange Platform (DXP), addressing challenges related to automation in cybersecurity and information sharing. Based on Common Requirements agreed upon by the participating Member States, the project demonstrated the HERMES the system’s key features and technologies to support cybersecurity protection solutions for future security and defence systems. Through close engagement with stakeholders, HERMES validated a novel approach to enhancing cyber resilience in autonomous military systems. This project brought together three SMEs with expertise in software development and cybersecurity for the full technical design of the HERMES DXP.
Objectives
Deliver the complete design of the HERMES Data Exchange Platform.
Enable automation and autonomy in cybersecurity operations.
Facilitate burden-sharing collaboration and outsourcing of cybersecurity data management.
Improve Information Superiority and Cyber Responsive Operations.
Bring forward SME innovation.
eBOS Role in the Project
eBOS coordinated the HERMES project, overseeing the planning, monitoring, reporting, evaluation and continuous assessment of all WPs, their associated tasks, and the overall execution of the implementation plan. It also assumed the role of the Quality Assurance Manager, implementing quality assurance procedures with particular focus on monitoring review activities and submitting quality review reports. Additionally, eBOS led the Innovation and IPR Management activities, monitoring the development of innovative tools and designing the project’s intellectual property protection strategy. eBOS was also responsible for leading the ‘Impact Maximisation’ work package, which included dissemination and communication activities, market analysis, business modelling, sustainability planning, stakeholder engagement, scaling-up efforts, and contributions to standardisation initiatives.
This project has received funding from the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP), under grant agreement No “EDIDP-SME-2020-099-HERMES”.
