Flexible, multi-mOdal and Robust FREIGHt Transport

Duration: 01/09/2022 – 31/12/2025
Total Funding: € 7,151,679

Overview

The Transport and Logistics sector plays a critical role in the international trade of goods, with the EU accounting for 15% of the total trade. The outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 showcased the importance of shipping goods nationally and internationally, highlighting its critical role in meeting the demands of modern life. At the same time, the sector’s resilience was put to the test by an unprecedented load of day-to-day shipments, interruptions to established supply chains and significant restrictions on national and international travel.

FOR-FREIGHT aims to enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness of multimodal freight transport by developing innovative solutions and integrating them with existing logistics systems. These solutions will support the optimisation of logistics processes across airports, ports, inland terminals, and other nodes, addressing stakeholder needs while considering economic, environmental, and social impacts. Key innovations will include global geo-location for real-time, door-to-door tracking of goods, AI/ML Decision Support Systems and Digital Twins for optimised resource utilisation, advanced data analytics and Blockchain for improved resilience to disruptions, and carbon footprint assessments and the use of public transport networks for enhanced sustainability and to reduce emissions. FOR-FREIGHT will enable seamless, intelligent, and sustainable freight transport.

Objectives

1

Design and develop novel and interoperable T&L solutions that will deliver increased T&L node operational capacity and increased efficiency and sustainability of multimodal and transshipment T&L services.

2

Build and deliver three state-of-the-art T&L experimentation facilities based on real operational multi-stakeholder environments supporting multimodal & transshipment ITU logistics.

3

Validate the FOR-FREIGHT solutions in real-life multimodal/multi-stakeholder environments using real end-user data, based on carefully designed UCs that will showcase the maturity and business-readiness of the solutions (TRL≥7), demonstrating the superior performance of the integrated, multi-stakeholder logistics chain management.

4

Foster the development and demonstrate the effectiveness of novel business models and collaborative approaches for interoperable, integrated and cooperative T&L services, utilising a comprehensive data governance framework.

5

Ensure compatibility with existing and emerging EU logistics standards, as well as promote and contribute to the standardisation of multimodal, multi-stakeholder end-to-end freight management solutions.

eBOS Role in the Project

eBOS’ technical role in FOR-FREIGHT is to contribute to the design, development and integration of the FOR-FREIGHT platform’s User Interface. This includes the provision of intuitive dashboards for monitoring and controlling the logistics process, as well as supporting all use case stakeholders during the field trials. eBOS will collaborate with consortium partners to ensure that all solutions developed at the trial sites are compatible and interoperable with the FOR-FREIGHT platform, and are suitable for the envisioned use cases.

Apart from designing and maintaining the project’s website, eBOS will lead the dissemination and communication tasks. Additionally, eBOS will contribute to the elaboration of the FOR-FREIGHT business models and sustainability plans. eBOS will lead the project’s Quality Assurance, safeguarding the quality of the deliverables, as well as be responsible for Risk Management.
