Flexible Open Architecture and AI-driven Enabling Technologies for a Novel 6G Connectivity Platform

Duration: 01/01/2025 – 31/12/2027
Total Funding: € 8,633,860

Overview

Over the past decade, technological advancements have reshaped the wireless communication landscape. The evolution of 5G has facilitated the deployment of “data-hungry” services, like enhanced Mobile Broadband, massive Machine-Type Communications, and Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications, which will evolve further through next-generation Smart Networks and Services in the 6G transition. The 6G vision to establish an intelligent, adaptive ‘network of networks’, integrating communication technologies, computational resources, and AI models will lay the groundwork for an increasingly complex, diverse, and intelligent digital ecosystem, where Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and Native AI-driven automation are fundamental. However, key challenges remain: integrating diverse technologies, establishing robust frameworks for interoperability, achieving trustworthiness, and providing Service Level Agreement performance guarantees across varying operational conditions.

FLECON-6G aims to develop an innovative blueprint for 6G architecture, characterised by distributed, modular, open, and collaborative frameworks. Built on trustworthiness principles, it will feature multi-layer Network Digital Twins (NDTs) spanning resource management, control, and business layers. Central to the project is the vision of an “Intelligent 6G Network of Networks,” enabling seamless integration of Native and Trustworthy AI. This architecture will support automated, scalable service composition and capability integration. By leveraging strengths across networks, subsystems, and domains, FLECON-6G will enable collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

Objectives

1

Develop and deploy an innovative architecture for next-generation 6G networks that seamlessly integrates public and private sectors and terrestrial and non-terrestrial components across all dimensions of control, data, and management systems.

2

Investigate, design, and develop efficient, native, and reliable AI algorithms tailored for intent-driven multi-stakeholder networks, ensuring g generalisability and uncertainty quantification.

3

Enable MNOs, infrastructure owners, and third-party application developers to leverage a Smart Marketplace that facilitates sustainable sharing and exposure of resources, NDTs, and AI models.

4

Investigate, design, and develop a multi-layer NDT framework and integrate it within a Zero-Touch 6G network architecture.

5

Propose and develop innovative data transfer paradigms incorporating advanced data plane techniques with deep Edge integration.

6

Integrate and demonstrate the potential and user value of FLECON-6G through targeted experimentation, testing, and validation of its innovations in PoCs.

7

Establish an integrated, end-to-end architecture for multiple stakeholders and implement a collaborative, distributed framework that facilitates recursive modelling, coordination, dynamic composition, and operation of multi-domain 6G networks of networks.

eBOS Role in the Project

eBOS’s technical role in the project will be to develop and implement an innovative marketplace that exposes network resources, models, and data to external vertical application providers, thereby enhancing integration and functionality within the collaborative framework. eBOS will be tasked with integrating the smart marketplace and the developed intent-based northbound APIs into the network of networks’ collaborative framework, ensuring seamless interoperability and optimised performance. Furthermore, eBOS will be responsible for creating the necessary interfaces to facilitate smooth communication and efficient data exchange within the network of networks collaborative framework.

In addition to its technical role, eBOS will act as the project’s Quality Assurance Manager and will assist in the elaboration of FLECON-6G’s dissemination and sustainability plans. Finally, it will contribute to the project’s plans to maximise the impact of the outcomes by presenting the project’s results to key membership associations.
