Optimodal European Travel Ecosystem

Duration: 01/05/2015 – 31/10/2017
Total Funding: € 3,873,992.50

Overview

Technological solutions have helped reduce transport’s environmental impact over the past 20 years, but they are not enough to address Europe’s broader economic, environmental, and social challenges. Integrated multimodal travel services, combining information, planning, and ticketing, can improve modal integration and make sustainable transport options more attractive and inclusive. However, the sector remains fragmented, with scattered knowledge and poor stakeholder collaboration, making it difficult for users to plan seamless, low-emission, door-to-door trips across Europe. This lack of coordination is a major barrier to implementing a cohesive and effective strategy for Intelligent Transport Systems deployment at the European level.

The EuTravel project aimed to support a single EU mobility market by enabling travellers to plan personalised, environmentally friendly multimodal trips and helping service providers offer tailored solutions. It promoted open, linked travel data to enhance user experience and encouraged industry collaboration toward seamless EU mobility. EuTravel developed an Optimodality Framework to integrate data and systems, removing interoperability barriers. It created Ecosystem Enablers for cost-effective service integration, ran a Living Lab to test real-life scenarios, and engaged stakeholders to promote sustainability. Unlike other initiatives, EuTravel delivered a practical ecosystem aligned with existing travel systems to support widespread adoption of Optimodal travel.

Objectives

1

Support the EU agenda towards an open and single European market for mobility services in travelling.

2

Support travel stakeholder organisations to invest and develop ICT infrastructure and services and publish content, enabling travellers to make an informed choice and make use of any mode of transport.

3

Support travel stakeholder organisations produce innovative offers not previously possible, respecting the environment.

4

Promote the creation of content, “open and linked data” for travellers enriching the travelling experience and the route insights.

5

Support all key travel industry players wishing to join forces towards realising an EU shared seamless mobility strategy and architecture.

eBOS Role in the Project

As part of the EuTravel project, eBOS developed an advanced Travel Planner solution that integrates multiple transport modes, including ferry, train, and bus. The solution supports multi-device and cross-browser compatibility, allowing users to plan seamless, door-to-door journeys tailored to their individual profiles. Throughout the project, eBOS gained specialised expertise in implementing responsive web solutions. This know-how was subsequently applied to enhance the functionality of the WiseBOS Suite Software and to design and deliver custom web-based solutions for eBOS clients.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 636148.
