AI-augmented ecosystem for Earth Observation data accessibility with Extended reality User Interfaces for Service and data exploitation

Duration: 01/06/2022 – 30/11/2025
Total Funding: € 9,065,033

Overview

The recent rapid growth of Earth Observation (EO) data, combined with the ever-increasing development of analytical theories and tools, has generated a wide range of practical applications, including land, maritime, climate change and atmospheric monitoring. Despite the plethora of EO data offered from current EU services and repositories, they have not yet reached the wider industry, to tangibly improve our health and lives and protect the planet. High-value EO information remains unexploited, it is often fragmented, complex, diverse, and difficult to find, retrieve, download, process and transform into useful formats for analytics and Geographic Information Systems, as it requires domain expertise.

The EO4EU project will develop a platform to simplify access to and use of EO data for environmental monitoring, public services, and business applications. EO4EU will promote pre-operational European services and utilise existing platforms and services. The platform will connect major EO data sources such as DestinE, GEOSS, INSPIRE, Copernicus, and Galileo, and will offer tools for data discovery, analysis, and visualisation, supported by machine learning, cloud computing, and high-performance computing. It will feature user-friendly interfaces, including extended reality options, enabling intuitive use of EO data.

Objectives

1

Design and deploy a holistic Data Operation (DataOps) ecosystem to enhance access and usability of environmental observation information.

2

Deploy a semantic-enhanced knowledge graph that augments the FAIRness of EO data knowledge and supports a sophisticated representation of data entities and their dynamics.

3

Advanced stakeholders’ knowledge capacity through informed decision-making and policy-making support.

4

Design and deploy a machine learning pipeline that enables the dynamic annotation of the various environmental observation data sources.

5

Implement and validate EO4EU in a full range of use case scenarios addressing current data needs, capitalising existing digital services and platforms, fostering their usability and practicality, taking into account ethical aspects aiming to social impact maximisation.

6

Deploy efficient, reliable and interoperable inter- and intra- layer communications.

7

Achieve wide communication, scientific dissemination and vertical exploitation of scientific results and outputs.

eBOS Role in the Project

In EO4EU, eBOS will lead the Requirements Elicitation and Conceptual Framework Specification and, in collaboration with the consortium partners, it will define the user requirements and system characteristics. eBOS will also contribute to the detailed analysis of the research areas that underpin the project’s innovation strategy. eBOS will develop the front-end of the EO4EU DataOps Ecosystem, offering advanced Graphical user Interfaces at all stages of the data lifecycle. The EO4EU DataOps Ecosystem will integrate a plethora of EO data for monitoring and simulating natural and human activity, as well as develop and validate scenarios that would enable more sustainable development and support European environmental policies. Therefore, eBOS will define and promote innovative tools, methodologies and approaches aiming to assist a wide spectrum of users, from domain experts and professionals to citizens, to benefit from EO data. eBOS will also set up and integrate the service-oriented architecture of the DataOps Ecosystem, and will ensure that the data collected are stored successfully so that users can access them effectively, and that continuous integration is taking place.

Finally, eBOS will contribute to the Quality Assurance and Risk Management tasks, as well as Dissemination and Communication activities.
