eBOS attends 6th NextGEM plenary meeting in Delft

The 6th Plenary meeting of the NextGEM project took place between the 8th and 10th of October 2024, hosted by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS), in the beautifully picturesque town of Delft in The Netherlands. The excellence in education and research of TUD and THUAS also renders Delft a hub on the global map of innovation and scientific research. eBOS was represented at the event by Nicolas Louca, R&D Project Manager, who IS the eBOS focal point for all related project activities.

Over the course of three days, over 30 participants from 21 different organisations presented the significant progress made across all Work Packages since February’s last plenary in Brussels and used the opportunity to align on the way forward on all aspects of the projects, including the scientific research conducted within the scope of NextGEM along with the associated experimental use cases, the development of the NIKH platform, as well as the outreach activities of NextGEM, including dissemination & communication, exploitation, intellectual property rights (IPR) management and the provision of guidelines to legislation and standardisation authorities across the globe.

Hosts THUAS and TU Delft also provided immensely interesting tours of their facilities. During the first day, THUAS showcased their  labs . Towards the end of the plenary, TU Delft toured the partners around the KET labs of the Next Generation Sensing and Communication Laboratory (XG-lab), a cluster of micro-wave laboratories used by TU Delft and their partners for EMF measurements. In addition, a tour was also provided around TU Delft’s “Green Village”, which is essentially a “living lab” site dedicated to the testing of innovative “green” technologies for addressing the challenges of sustainability and environmental preservation.

The NextGEM is a 4-year-long EU-funded project aiming to ensure the safety of EU citizens in relation to radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure from current and future telecommunication technologies. NextGEM will generate valuable knowledge to support prevention and control measures in various environments, such as residential, public, and occupational settings. The outcomes of NextGEM will be consolidated in the European NextGEM Innovation and Knowledge Hub (NIKH), which will provide insights to regulatory authorities, scientists, and the general public about the health impacts of EMF exposure.

The project focuses on three primary use cases to assess the potential health effects of EMF exposure, including indoor levels affecting vulnerable populations, outdoor 5G urban planning, and health impacts of mmWave EMF exposure. NextGEM’s objectives involve measuring and modeling radio frequency sources, assessing health effects, identifying risk factors, and developing the NIKH. The project’s impact will be amplified through wide dissemination and engagement with stakeholders. eBOS, one of the key partners, is responsible for designing the project’s graphical user interface and leading the work package on stakeholder engagement and awareness.

Within the NextGEM project, eBOS plays a pivotal role across multiple domains, including quality assurance, exploitation, intellectual property rights (IPR) management, project outreach, and the development of the front-end dashboard for the NIKH platform. As the project’s Quality Manager, eBOS ensures that all deliverables are completed on time and meet the required high quality standards. Additionally, eBOS leads the design and implementation of the graphical user interface and front-end dashboard of NIKH.

Moreover, eBOS leads the Work Package associated with the project’s outreach efforts, which includes dissemination, communication, and engagement with stakeholders. eBOS also leads the task for IPR management, safeguarding the project’s innovations, and exploitation activities, maximising the impact and potential of NextGEM’s outcomes. This involvement underscores eBOS’s role in driving both technical and strategic elements of the project.
