AI-empowered Edge Cloud Continuum for self-aware cognitive computing environments
Overview
Next generation enablers, such as IoT, AI and cloud computing, open new opportunities to deal with the world’s current and future societal, environmental, and economic challenges. However, they come with significant data management challenges. The total data generated by connected devices is expected to exceed 40 trillion gigabytes by 2025. In most current systems, data storage and analysis happen on centralised cloud-based locations, pushing network capacity to its limits. Centralised storage and processing create single points of failure, posing serious risks in cases of disasters or crises. Recurring natural disasters, health crises, security threats and climate change highlight the need for resilient and energy-efficient information systems.
COGNIFOG will target these challenges by building a Cognitive Fog Framework that aims to (i) decrease energy consumption and latency in next generation IT systems, (ii) reduce OPEX and provide faster service provisioning, and (iii) ensure European leadership through an open interoperable framework. COGNIFOG is an innovative initiative integrating AI-driven cognitive computing with fog and edge-cloud technologies to optimise resource management across IoT, edge, and cloud infrastructures. By enabling real-time data analysis and decision-making, COGNIFOG will enhance efficiency, scalability, and security, making it ideal for applications in smart cities, industrial automation, and healthcare.
Objectives
Build the architectural foundations of the Cognitive-Fog, an open, flexible, adaptive and modular edge-cloud continuum framework.
Develop the enabling technologies of the Cognitive-Fog with orchestration capabilities over heterogeneous IT resources and services, to form a decentralised computing continuum with real-time scalable AI-based monitoring and analytical capabilities for improved privacy, security, reliability, resilience and safety.
Empower the Cognitive-Fog with advance load balancing and energy management capabilities to significantly reduce energy consumption and cost.
Validate the Cognitive-Fog capabilities in novel use cases covering multiple and different domains, promote the use of Cognitive-Fog through wide dissemination and communication (D&C) means, standardisation and clustering actions and exploit its key results to ensure sustainability and trust over a wide edge ecosystem addressing diverse industries.
eBOS Role in the Project
In COGNIFOG, eBOS will lead the development of the application layer components, including the front-end dashboard and graphical user interface of the system. Additionally, eBOS will lead the development of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), enabling the interfacing of 3rd party applications in COGNIFOG. eBOS will capture the technical specifications, mapping the system functionality requirements with the respective Unified Modelling Language diagrams. Furthermore, eBOS will develop the necessary packages for system deployment as a web-based service, enabling multi-tenancy and concurrency. eBOS will define and implement REST APIs based on open standards, enabling software developers to define API calls with high granularity and providing interoperability between their applications and COGNIFOG.
Moreover, eBOS will lead the development of a coherent strategy to deliver outreach, exploitation, dissemination, communication, and training activities, ensuring a lasting and effective wide-scale impact. It will be responsible for the project’s dissemination and communication strategy, developing and deploying information, tools, channels, and platforms for the targeted stakeholders, and engaging in the wider dissemination of the outputs. eBOS will also be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of the project’s website and social media channels, and disseminate key project results to their wide range of clusters and associations.
