Climate Adaptation and Resilience Demonstrated In the MEDiterranean region

Duration: 01/09/2023 – 29/02/2028
Total Funding: € 19,307,911.25

Overview

The twin digital and green transition lies at the core of the European Green Deal, yet in the Mediterranean region, a diverse climate hotspot, achieving a nature-positive and climate-resilient society is a challenge. The variety of regional development and vulnerability levels, the challenges of social engagement and digital literacy, as well as the repercussions of low institutional readiness, constitute barriers. Even though Nature-based Solutions (NBS) are globally recognised as significant climate-change toolkits, uptake by governments, communities and professionals remains low. Lack of on-the-ground evidence leads to low NBS literacy and limited receptivity.

CARDIMED will investigate systemic transformations in Climate Resilience (CR) in the Mediterranean region, by unifying and mainstreaming all initiatives addressing climate adaptation and mitigation through NBS and other engineered infrastructure. It will develop a digital framework to assess NBS impacts and support stakeholder engagement, alongside modelling tools for decision-making in climate risk mitigation. Through nine Demonstrator clusters across urban, rural, and peri-urban areas, CARDIMED will showcase NBS effectiveness and promote circular, digital, and community-led solutions. By 2030, it aims to connect 28 regions and 70 communities, scaling up resilience via co-creation, knowledge translation, and a sustainable network for wider NBS adoption and impact.

Objectives

1

Develop a comprehensive digital framework, capable of providing region-wide assessment of the NBS impacts to climate resilience, while supporting stakeholder engagement through intuitive tools and interfaces.

2

Deliver a holistic suite of modelling tools for assessing and providing decision support with regards to Climate Resilience (CR), focusing on NBS applicability for mitigating climate risks.

3

Introduce a strategy to scale-up community resilience, engaging stakeholders and co-creating with local communities’ knowledge impact and knowledge translation pathways.

4

Showcase the validity and potential of NBS as key tools towards building regional CR.

5

Consolidate the project’s results and establish a growing network for the build-up of CR in the MED region, improving acceptance to NBS and CR solutions, establishing links with relevant initiatives and ensure the financial sustainability of the network.

eBOS Role in the Project

In CARDIMED, eBOS will lead the implementation, validation, and demonstration of 4 Nature-based and circular solutions in Cyprus. More specifically, eBOS will coordinate the interventions in Demo 9 “Gardens of the Future in the heart of Nicosia”. It will be responsible for installing cameras and monitoring vegetable growth using AI-based plant growth monitoring.
