Biorefining of sugars via Process Intensification
Overview
Lignocellulosic biomass holds immense potential as a sustainable raw material for bio-based chemicals, materials, and fuels. However, its efficient processing remains a challenge, particularly in relation to hemicelluloses (HMC), which are underutilised due to their complex composition and the resource-intensive nature of their purification. Current biorefineries focus mainly on cellulose and lignin, often discarding or inefficiently processing HMC streams. These inefficiencies lead to high costs, low yields, and increased waste. Conventional processes also rely on harsh conditions that compromise sustainability, safety, and economic viability. Efficiently valorising HMC streams is therefore crucial for achieving a more sustainable, high-performing bio-based economy in Europe.
BioSPRINT addressed these challenges by developing an intensified, integrated biorefinery approach to valorise hemicellulose streams, particularly from hardwood, straw, and industrial processes. The project applied advanced purification, catalytic conversion, and polymerisation methods to convert HMC-derived sugars into valuable bio-based resins. Innovations included membrane separation, anti-solvent precipitation, extractive-reaction techniques, and intensified catalytic and polymerisation processes. BioSPRINT embraced process intensification to reduce costs, energy use, and emissions while increasing yields and operational safety. The project demonstrated how underused HMC streams could be efficiently transformed into high-value products, aligning with circular economy goals and offering a viable alternative to fossil-based polymers.
Objectives
Intensify the purification of sugars by removal of impurities present and/or generated in the lignocellulose fractioning steps, in upstream purification.
Investigate intensified reaction methodologies for dehydration of sugars into furans (furfural and 5-HMF) and optimise their production, in the catalytic conversion area.
Develop methods to purify the converted sugar streams into non-aqueous functionalised furan monomer bulk/solutions and to create intensification strategies minimising furans degradation, in downstream purification.
Convert furans into resol and novolactype resins and polyols and formulate biorenewable resins to enable the convergence of different feedstock molecules into similar polymers, allowing maximisation of the final product yields for consumers products, at the final polymerisation stage.
Simulate the improved biorefinery concept and processes and compare them with SOTA, followed by integration and validation of the developed concepts and technologies for the 2 studied streams (FhG/UPM) and a transferability study for the Clariant stream.
Demonstrate the final processes and products’ sustainability and safety; to establish the economic feasibility of the BioSPRINT concepts and technologies via a thorough ILCSA.
Exploit the project’s results fully by means of multidimensional Dissemination & Communication, stakeholder engagement, Training & Capacity building, standardisation and business planning activities.
eBOS Role in the Project
In BioSPRINT, eBOS led the ICT development efforts, focusing on the application of Machine Learning to optimise catalyst development and enhance the monitoring of complex systems. Using advanced data analytics and visualisation techniques, eBOS supported effective system oversight and contributed to the techno-economic assessment of project innovations. This included modelling approaches that informed investment decisions and strategic planning. Their role was crucial in integrating intelligent digital tools that improved decision-making processes and overall system efficiency.
Beyond technical contributions, eBOS ensured high project standards through the implementation of the quality management plan, the organisation of peer reviews, and continuous risk assessment and monitoring. They produced regular risk and quality reports and led the task on integrating Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities (SSH) throughout the project. Additionally, eBOS designed the project’s visual identity and website, produced communication materials, and supported the delivery of the online Training, Education and Capacity Building programme. These responsibilities positioned eBOS as a key partner in both project execution and outreach.
