5G Solutions for European Citizens
Overview
The “fifth generation” of telecommunication systems, or 5G, will be one of the most critical building blocks of the European digital economy and society in the next decade. Significant steps towards this strategic technology are being made at EU level, within the framework of the 5G Public Private Partnership, in view of validating the technology across domains.
5G-SOLUTIONS aimed to demonstrate that 5G enables industry verticals to access a wide range of forward-looking services, with remarkable improvement over 4G. The project conducted field trials across five industry domains: Factories of the Future, Smart Energy, Smart Cities, Smart Ports, and Media and Entertainment. The project validated a diverse set of use cases, both separately and concurrently, at 5G-EVE and 5G-VINNI facilities. It involved real end-users and assessed their technical performance, business potential, and alignment with ethical and social standards. The project also provided technological enablers to automate field trials, including a unified cross-domain service orchestrator for multidomain slicing and 5G service lifecycle automation, a smart Key Performance Indicator (KPI) visualisation system for near real-time analysis, presentation, benchmarking and validation of 5G network KPIs against target values, and intent-based APIs for stimulating innovation and fostering the development, portability and provisioning of new applications by SMEs.
Objectives
Develop realistic, advanced and business relevant innovative use case scenarios in five key vertical industries.
Interface with key ICT-17 facilities and develop the technological enablers for the validation of the use cases.
Demonstrate the potential and the user value of advanced 5G solutions through extensive technological validation in field trials directly involving end-users in Living Labs (LLs).
Develop and validate the business models of the use cases in 5G-SOLUTIONS LLs, whilst ensuring long-term social acceptance and economic sustainability, extending beyond the lifespan of the project through a joint commercialisation plan.
Provide significant contribution to relevant 5G standardisation bodies, to relevant open source communities, to relevant industry standardisation and user/technology communities.
Disseminate and exploit the project’s results, to maximise the project’s visibility and facilitate dissemination and communication activities, and to contribute to the objectives of the European 5G-PPP Programme.
eBOS Role in the Project
As part of the 5G-SOLUTIONS project, eBOS leveraged its 15-year experience in ICT to design, develop, integrate and deploy key technological enablers, in particular the innovative KPI visualisation system and the intent-based APIs that supported the execution of the field trials. In addition, eBOS assumed responsibility for the project’s Quality Assurance and Risk Management, overseeing the organisation and implementation of the Quality Management Plan, and coordinating peer and quality reviews for all deliverables .
Consortium
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 856691.
