5th Generation Connected & Automated Mobility Cross-Border EU Trials

Duration: 01/09/2020 – 28/02/2025
Total Funding: € 9,177,397.88

Overview

One of the key challenges for emerging 5G networks has been enabling seamless Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) across borders and transport modes, for both passengers and cargo. CAM requires advanced digital technologies like AI, IoT, and high-performance 5G, alongside innovative services such as driverless vehicles. These developments offer business potential and aim to make EU transport safer, cleaner, and more efficient. Cross-border cooperation is essential, involving various stakeholders to ensure interoperability. Large-scale pilots are crucial for validating technologies and exploring broader use cases beyond safety, including automated driving, infotainment, and multimodal transportation services.

5G-ROUTES aimed to validate through robust evidence the latest 5G features and 3GPP specifications (R.16 & R.17) of Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) under realistic conditions. In particular, it conducted advanced large-scale field trials of the most representative CAM applications to demonstrate seamless functionality across a prominent 5G cross-border corridor (Via Baltica-North), which traverses Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. This helped to boost confidence and accelerate the deployment of 5G-based interoperable CAM ecosystems and services throughout Europe. It also aimed to validate 5G as a true enabler of innovative CAM services that cannot be realised by existing technology.

Objectives

1

Develop innovative and commercially exploitable CAM use cases for automotive, railway and maritime sectors within the cross-border context.

2

Analyse the technical and business requirements for the use cases to enable extensive large-scale CAM field trials in the ‘Via Baltica-North’ 5G corridor.

3

Advance and optimise the enabling technologies using AI for the reliable, seamless and uninterrupted delivery of interoperable CAM services across borders.

4

Leverage and upgrade key assets from previous results and commercial products; to integrate the technological enablers in an end-to end CAM ecosystem, to setup the 5G corridor and to facilitate lab and large-scale field trial validation.

5

Demonstrate the potential and the user value in advanced CAM deployments at cross-border areas, by characterising and optimising 5G technologies at both lab tests and large-scale trials, to validate applicable standards and key target KPIs thus boosting the confidence for wide adoption of interoperable CAM services in Europe.

6

Develop and validate the business models of advanced CAM use cases that can be offered on top of existing services in a multi cross-border 5G operator environment, demonstrating benefits from potential operational cost reductions and new revenue generation streams.

7

Identify and validate applicable standards as well as provide rationalised contribution to key standardisation bodies to sustain standardisation in the telecom and automotive sectors within the CAM context.

8

Ensure long-term success through wide dissemination of the project’s results, exploit synergies with other 5G-PPP projects and 5G CAM initiatives, actively contribute to the 5G Action Plan strategic initiative with results from 5G technologies validation in CAM trials for the benefit of the European 5G, automotive, railways, maritime, transport & logistics industries, the university education and training of young and other professionals.

eBOS Role in the Project

In 5G-ROUTES, eBOS participated in all activities related to the requirements analysis, use cases and preparation for CAM trials. As part of the development of technological enablers, eBOS led the design and development of the Tenant Web Portal, and its deployment as a cloud-based service. eBOS leveraged the KPI visualisation system developed in 5G-SOLUTIONS, extending its functionality to cover the CAM use cases of 5G-ROUTES. eBOS was also involved in the integration and testing of the project’s technological enablers and infrastructure setup, ensuring operational readiness. Additionally, eBOS contributed to the onboarding and engagement of external SMEs and start-ups, encouraging the development of new components, the addressing of emerging CAM use cases and the submission of ideas for exploiting 5G-ROUTES results. eBOS actively engaged in collaboration activities with the 5G PPP Working Groups.

Further to its technical tasks, eBOS undertook the role of Innovation & Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Management of the project and led the development of an effective innovation strategy and management of IPR resulting from the project. eBOS also supported the Project Coordinator, Ericsson Estonia, in quality assurance and risk management activities.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 951867.
