5th Generation Enhanced Robot Autonomy

Duration: 01/01/2021 – 31/12/2023
Total Funding: € 6,029,677.50

Overview

Autonomous robots are essential for many 5G vertical sectors and has the significance in automated mobility, Industry 4.0 and healthcare. 5G, on the other hand, has the great potential to enhance robot autonomy. It is truly enabling with respect to the shift of knowledge and learning from the individual to collective that robot autonomy enhancement needs. To use the potential allowing third parties to develop autonomous robotic applications across vertical sectors, it is important and urgently needed to further develop and standardise experimentation facilities.

5G-ERA developed an enhanced 5G experimentation facility enabling third-party users, such as SMEs and service providers, to test robotic applications on integrated, open 5G platforms across multiple domains. Using existing 5G testbeds, the project validated use cases tailored to robotics. It addressed the need for robotic autonomy by offloading learning processes to the cloud via 5G, overcoming computing, safety, and data bias limitations. Following a PDCA (plan-do-check-act) model, robots act in the real world while planning and learning virtually. A continuously updated digital twin enables real-time monitoring, decision support, and optimisation of robotic operations through cloud-based collective intelligence.

Objectives

1

Develop an intent-based networking paradigm for optimised Quality of Experience (QoE) to support enhanced robot autonomy in real-world applications.

2

Develop a 5G-ERA middleware which enables cloud native resource provision over autonomous robots.

3

Achieve standardised APIs by integrating Robot Operating System (ROS) with Open Source (MANO) Management and Orchestration (OSM).

4

Showcase enhanced QoE on experimental facilities for vertical applications.

eBOS Role in the Project

In 5G-ERA eBOS was also responsible for designing and implementing the front-end dashboard, leading the visualisation and user interface development of the project. Additionally, eBOS participated in the analysis of task requirements, environmental demands and vertical user needs for robotic applications with 5G enhanced robot autonomy. The team contributed to the specification of the system architecture and definition protocols. Furthermore, eBOS was involved in the 5G testing framework and participated in the validation, verification and field trials of the project’s use cases.

Apart from its contribution to technical tasks, eBOS led the Dissemination and Exploitation activities, implementing the project’s communication plan and its associated activities to maximise visibility and impact.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101016681.
